Import or draw
Bring in an SVG, or draw a rectangle to start.
You need something on the canvas to cut or engrave. Either bring in a file you already have, or draw a simple shape to test the workflow.
Option A: import a file
Beam Bench imports SVG, DXF, PDF, AI, EPS, and common raster images (PNG, JPG).
- File → Import (or
Ctrl+I). - Pick the file.
- The file appears on the canvas at its natural size. If it came in too big or too small, see SVG came in wrong size.
- Drag it where you want it on the bed.
For raster images that should be engraved (photos, halftones), import the image then either:
- Engrave directly using the raster modes (see Dithering algorithms)
- Or vectorize first with the Trace Image dialog
Option B: draw a test rectangle
- Activate the Rectangle tool from the Creation Toolbar, or press
Ctrl+R. - Drag on the canvas to draw a rectangle. Hold
Shiftwhile dragging to constrain to a square. - Hit Esc to return to the Select tool.
A small rectangle (say, 20 mm × 20 mm) is a good test piece for verifying power and speed before committing to a real cut.

The object is on the canvas, with default layer assignment (the currently selected color in the Color Palette). Position, size, and rotation are visible in the Properties Toolbar at the top of the screen and in the Shape Properties panel on the right.
