Beam Bench Docs

Settings, Units & Grid

Display units, grid spacing, snap tolerances, and nudge distances.

The Units & Grid tab controls how Beam Bench presents distances and how the canvas snaps your interactions.

Open it from Edit → Settings or Ctrl+,.

Fields

Display Unit

Buttons: mm / inches.

Controls the unit used everywhere distances appear: rulers, Shape Properties, Move panel, layer settings, the Step input.

Internally Beam Bench always works in millimeters; this setting only affects display.

Default: mm.

Speed Time Unit

Buttons: minutes / seconds.

Controls whether layer speeds are shown as mm/min or mm/s. GRBL controllers expect mm/min in G-code regardless; this is purely a display preference.

Default: see active machine profile. Most diode users prefer mm/s. Most CO2 users prefer mm/min.

Grid spacing (mm)

Number, min 0.1.

The major grid line spacing on the canvas, in millimeters.

Default: 10 mm.

When to change: set to a multiple of your common material thickness, or to match a jig you regularly use.

Object snap distance (px)

Number, 1–20.

How close to another object the cursor needs to be (in screen pixels) for the snap-to-object indicator to engage.

Default: 8.

Smaller values mean snapping only engages when very close, useful in dense designs. Larger values make snapping more aggressive.

Click tolerance (px)

Number, 1–20.

The screen-pixel radius around the cursor that counts as "you clicked on this object" when selecting.

Default: 5.

Increase for high-DPI displays or precise mice; decrease if you keep accidentally selecting nearby objects.

Nudge (mm)

Number, min 0.

The distance an arrow-key press moves the selection.

Default: 1 mm.

Fine nudge (mm)

Number, min 0.

The distance a Shift+arrow press moves the selection.

Default: 0.1 mm.

Coarse nudge (mm)

Number, min 0.

The distance a Ctrl+arrow press moves the selection.

Default: 10 mm.
